The 10 Best 10 international photo competition is a definitive showcase of the very best of contemporary photography. Photo by Victor Grebnev. - CRIA Novosti / TopFotoThe new TopFoto Gallery in Edenbridge was proud to launch the “Soviet Times: Russian Times, 1917-2010” exhibit, which will run from February 4 through March 31, 2010.  The exhibit features work from Soviet-era and modern Russian photographers and captures the tragic and important history of the USSR and Russia from the Revolution days of 1917 through current times. The show includes the work of renowned Russian photographers, including World Press Award winners Vladimir Vyatkin, whose image of soldiers in Chechnya won the Gold Medal in 2002.

London Features International opening Office in Los AngelesLondon Features International (LFI) has announced that it is expanding with a new office in Los Angeles, which will open in February 2010. The new LA office will be headed up by industry veteran Clive Howes, in the capacity of Managing Editor USA. Previously Howes worked for Getty Images as their Global Workflow Manager, Clive has also worked for agencies such as Action Images and Reuters, as well as Picture Editor at national newspapers. Clive is regarded as the father of Editorial Digital Photography in the UK, getting the first live digital image used as early as 1988 and founding the first true digital agency in 1996 with Fast News Photo’s.

NANPA Foundation’s Philip Hyde Grant award goes to Paul Colangelo

Nordic Photos Celebrates 30th Anniversary for MIRAMIRA, created through the combination of Scandinavian photography collectives Saftra, Bildnian and Frilansguppen, is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its founding.  MIRA was acquired by Nordic Photos in 2003 and remains an important and visible brand for the Iceland-based company.  The collection, which still includes its two founders as main contributors, also includes work from a number of new photographers, each contributing to the highly artistic and documentary-style feel the collection has been known for since its inception.

Stock Artists Alliance's free metadata seminars serves nearly 800 picture professionalsThe Stock Artists Alliance (SAA) , a trade organization for stock photographers, announced last May that it was launching an educational speaking series called getMETAsmart made possible with an award from the Library of Congress and supported by industry partners. Since then SAA is touting that it has already held seven, free educational events over the past two months, with nearly 800 participants from around the country. The Stock Artists Alliance plans three more getMETAsmart events for this fall.

Great Fotopedians - album created by Adrian MeasuresPalo Alto, Calif based Fotopedia has launched with hopes of transforming the online photo space with a photo encyclopedia that lets photographers, curators, and visitors contribute, collaborate and enrich images to be useful to the whole community. First launched to private beta in September 2008 as Fotonauts, Fotopedia can be used to organize photos from personal storage, Flickr, Picasa, and other services based on subject or any user-defined index, alongside a mashup of contextual information. Fotopedia is the brainchild of Jean-Marie Hullot, former CTO of NeXT Software and Apple’s Application Division.

Young Photpgraphers Alliance debuts in Chicago with scholarships for aspiring photographersThe Young Photographers Alliance (YPA), a not-for-profit organization established in early 2009 as an educational foundation focused on bringing disadvantaged students opportunities for advancement in photography, recently made its debut in Chicago at Picturehouse’s 4th annual event held on Thursday April 16, 2009 at the River East Art Center. YPA is the creation of Jerry Tavin, co-founder of IC Worldwide and Deborah Free, President of Picturehouse Marketing US. Both are widely-recognized as advocates and leaders in the photography industry. “We are pleased that YPA was so well received after our announcement. The enthusiasm and support was immediate, both at the Picturehouse event and the PACA Annual Meeting held in Chicago,” said Jerry Tavin.

On World Intellectual Property Day this year, WIPO's focus is on promoting green innovation as the key to a secure future.The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a specialized agency of the United Nations, has announced the theme for its annual World Intellectual Property Day to be held on April 26 will be “promoting green innovation as a key element in meeting the challenges of climate change”. In his message to mark the day, WIPO Director General Francis Gurry highlights the contribution that a balanced intellectual property (IP) system can make in enabling the development of technology-based solutions to mitigate the impact of climate change.
