Press Photographer Steve Mack has launched a website which aims to teach amateur or experienced shooters how to master the art of ‘Red Carpet Photography.’ The Red Carpet University at tear-sheets.net covers topics like The Basics, The Business and The Techniques. Within each of those topics are sub topics that explain in great detail what equipment is needed, how to set camera equipment, where to find work and what is expected of professional editorial entertainment news photographers.

WIN-Initiative announces 10 Best 10 international photo competition
WIN-Initiative, an independent stock photo agency based in New York has announced that it has teamed up with 10 art/fashion/lifestyle magazines from different countries to host a global photography competition. The 10 Best 10 international photo competition is a definitive showcase of the very best of contemporary photography. WIN-Initiative’s 10 BEST 10 International Competition is designed to be a showcase of the very best of contemporary photography. The editors from each partner magazine will pick ten winners total (The 10 BEST 10) based on the entries from their region. They assign their winners a photo shoot to be executed for their magazine. Each winner will win a DSLR camera. Winners will be required to document their entire photo production on the video function of their new camera or on an alternate mini cam. A distinguished jury will award a Grand Prize of $3000 to the most outstanding layout and photography.

PhotoShelter Partners with PicScout to track and monetize images online
PhotoShelter, an online storage and archiving business for photographers has announced that it has teamed up with PicScout, a technology company with offices in the U.S. and Israel best known for their Image Tracker and PicApp products, to automatically include PhotoShelter photographers’ images in the PicScout ImageIRC (index, registry and connection platform). As part of this partnership PhotoShelter photographers’ images will be identified by PicScout’s ImageExchange add-on which populates an (i) icon on images wherever they are used online providing valuable information to image users and a one click connection back to the PhotoShelter photographer’s e-commerce page to facilitate legitimate image sales.

TopFoto’s gallery launches exhibit chronicling Russia and the Soviet Union from 1917-2010
The new TopFoto Gallery in Edenbridge was proud to launch the “Soviet Times: Russian Times, 1917-2010” exhibit, which will run from February 4 through March 31, 2010. The exhibit features work from Soviet-era and modern Russian photographers and captures the tragic and important history of the USSR and Russia from the Revolution days of 1917 through current times. The show includes the work of renowned Russian photographers, including World Press Award winners Vladimir Vyatkin, whose image of soldiers in Chechnya won the Gold Medal in 2002.

ASPP and PACA launch “REINVENTION WEEKEND” conference for photography professionals
The American Society of Picture Professionals (ASPP) has teamed up with the the Picture Archive Council of America (PACA) to produce a “Reinvention Weekend” conference in Boston on April 15th – 18th. The focus of the conference is to aid attendees in Reinventing, Reimagining and Reinvigorating your career or your approach to the photography business. The conference is being structured to foster spirited dialogues with photo contemporaries including: stock agents, researchers, editors, publishers, art buyers, photographers and consultants.

London Features International opening office in Los Angeles
London Features International (LFI) has announced that it is expanding with a new office in Los Angeles, which will open in February 2010. The new LA office will be headed up by industry veteran Clive Howes, in the capacity of Managing Editor USA. Previously Howes worked for Getty Images as their Global Workflow Manager, Clive has also worked for agencies such as Action Images and Reuters, as well as Picture Editor at national newspapers. Clive is regarded as the father of Editorial Digital Photography in the UK, getting the first live digital image used as early as 1988 and founding the first true digital agency in 1996 with Fast News Photo’s.

Fotolia’s top-earning contributors net six figure incomes in 2009
Despite average image sale prices between $1 and $20, the three top contributors to micro-stock site Fotolia all earned more than $100,000 during 2009. NANPA Foundation’s Philip Hyde Grant award goes to Paul Colangelo
The North American Nature Photography Association Foundation (NANPA) announced that Vancouver, BC’s Paul Colangelo would be the recipient of the $5000 Philip Hyde Grant for 2010, to be presented at the NANPA Summit in Reno this coming February. The grant is awarded annually to a NANPA member actively working on an environmental project.

Nordic Photos celebrates 30th anniversary for MIRA
MIRA, created through the combination of Scandinavian photography collectives Saftra, Bildnian and Frilansguppen, is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its founding. MIRA was acquired by Nordic Photos in 2003 and remains an important and visible brand for the Iceland-based company. The collection, which still includes its two founders as main contributors, also includes work from a number of new photographers, each contributing to the highly artistic and documentary-style feel the collection has been known for since its inception.

Outdoor photography legends Art Wolfe, Tom Mangelsen, and David Doubilet have recently announced that they have launched a virtual stock photography agency called WILD Photography located at wildphotography.com and operating on the PhotoShelter platform. This trio (and others they plan to recruit) has stated that they will no longer be submitting work to the major stock agencies and instead will be leveraging their collective brand power and wealth of contacts to sell direct to clients.

Stock Artists Alliance’s free metadata seminars serves nearly 800 picture professionals
The Stock Artists Alliance (SAA) , a trade organization for stock photographers, announced last May that it was launching an educational speaking series called getMETAsmart made possible with an award from the Library of Congress and supported by industry partners. Since then SAA is touting that it has already held seven, free educational events over the past two months, with nearly 800 participants from around the country. The Stock Artists Alliance plans three more getMETAsmart events for this fall.

Fotopedia launches collaborative online photo encyclopedia
Palo Alto, Calif based Fotopedia has launched with hopes of transforming the online photo space with a photo encyclopedia that lets photographers, curators, and visitors contribute, collaborate and enrich images to be useful to the whole community. First launched to private beta in September 2008 as Fotonauts, Fotopedia can be used to organize photos from personal storage, Flickr, Picasa, and other services based on subject or any user-defined index, alongside a mashup of contextual information. Fotopedia is the brainchild of Jean-Marie Hullot, former CTO of NeXT Software and Apple’s Application Division.

Young Photographers Alliance debuts in Chicago with scholarships for aspiring photographers
The Young Photographers Alliance (YPA), a not-for-profit organization established in early 2009 as an educational foundation focused on bringing disadvantaged students opportunities for advancement in photography, recently made its debut in Chicago at Picturehouse’s 4th annual event held on Thursday April 16, 2009 at the River East Art Center. YPA is the creation of Jerry Tavin, co-founder of IC Worldwide and Deborah Free, President of Picturehouse Marketing US. Both are widely-recognized as advocates and leaders in the photography industry. “We are pleased that YPA was so well received after our announcement. The enthusiasm and support was immediate, both at the Picturehouse event and the PACA Annual Meeting held in Chicago,” said Jerry Tavin.

PantherMedia & NaturFoto Magazine launch “Wonders of Nature” photo competition
PantherMedia, a growing micro-stock image agency from Munich Germany has teamed up with NaturFoto Magazine, a German nature photography magazine to launch a new photo competition entitled “Wonders of Nature“ from May 1st - July 31st. WIPO selects ‘Promoting Green Innovation’ theme for 2009 World Intellectual Property Day
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a specialized agency of the United Nations, has announced the theme for its annual World Intellectual Property Day to be held on April 26 will be “promoting green innovation as a key element in meeting the challenges of climate change”. In his message to mark the day, WIPO Director General Francis Gurry highlights the contribution that a balanced intellectual property (IP) system can make in enabling the development of technology-based solutions to mitigate the impact of climate change.
